The bean or seed contains a poison called risin and risin as both highly toxic and fatal the ricin in the seed is protected though from the outer shell of the seed. So if the seed is swallowed hole nothing will happen but if the shell of the seed is broken by chewing for example the poison will be released it only takes seven castor beans to kill an adult if the ricin is released.
